Sew & Tell ~ Winds, Furs and Freezer Meals ~ March 4, 2024 from Melva Loves Scraps

Everyone turned their calendar pages so fast that they created a horrible swooshing wind... Ugh! It sounded like the big bad wolf was trying to blow our house down with the high gusts overnight.

The seasons are definitely changing.  The grass is greening, and the juniper trees are developing their buds... pollen is starting to fly, and allergies are getting ready to kick into high gear for many.

I love the smell of line dried clothing and the temps have been warm enough for that but have learned that it is best to avoid that for a month or 6 ...

Sew & Tell ~ February 26, 2024 from Melva Loves Scraps

What a week. Parts of it seemed to crawl by, but also in a strange way, sped by so fast!  I accomplished lots, so let's just get started.

My plan was to get as much quilting on two sections of my QAYG project before I needed to take the Jazz in for a spa day and pick up the Lyric.  I had thought "I just need to get the blocks quilted and I can join the sections together with the Lyric.  It was a solid plan.

I had invited a young quilter and her mom over to have a ...

Weekly update: cranes, spaghetti, estate sale, and a goal finished from With Strings Attached

Sign of spring:  cranes at Illinois Beach State Park.  They're camouflaged in the brown grass but their bugling gave them away.

I spoke to the driver of one of the trucks hauling rocks for the shoreline stabilization project. He said the quarry is in Waterloo, Wisconsin.  Rocks for inshore are trucked in. Rocks for the offshore reefs are trucked to the Port of Milwaukee and sent by barge, a trip that can take six hours.  Because the weather has been so mild they've been able to get weeks ahead of schedule.

Scrappy Double FG ~ Sew & Tell ~ Feb 19, 2024 from Melva Loves Scraps

Welcome to this week's Sew & Tell party... where progress and projects are shared, and inspiration is found!

I have had a difficult time keeping my brain focused on one single project.  I am typically the kind of girl that sees a project through from start to finish with no problem.  I blame this challenge on an evening with friends at which more wine than I normally consume was... well consumed (and, at the time, enjoyed).

It was simply an enjoyable time with friends as we caught up on our lives and laughed about memories... and there have been plenty ...

Weekly update: scrappy mountains from With Strings Attached

I'm working on a commission quilt (#3 of my four-part OMG list this month).  It's for Janice's daughter's wedding this summer.  Janice, her mother Joanne, and her sister-in-law Michelle have all won quilts I've made for our AAUW raffle so this is a third-generation quilt.  Janice said I could make anything which of course imposed more pressure rather than less.

I've always wanted to try Bonnie Hunter's Scrappy Mountain Majesties.  I showed a photo of someone's version (found online) to Janice. She liked it.  Decision made!   I chose a cool blue/green ...

Sew & Tell ~ February 2/12/2024 from Melva Loves Scraps

Welcome to this week's edition of Sew & Tell!

It is Valentine's week and I spent one day last week making some corny cards for the grandkids... microwave popcorn included with each punchline.  You can see them on the Feeling A Little Corny story.

I spent a fair amount of time piecing the final blocks for my newest sew along event... I've been referring to it as The Bride's Quilt II... however, after allowing the concept of including questions for the participants to answer and create their own story quilt to "ferment", I am settled on calling ...

Weekly update, part 2: goals achieved from With Strings Attached

Goals?  As I type this the Super Bowl is in overtime.  Kansas City won!!!

We've been watching though my attitude is more in line with the Dowager Countess.

Last week I stated my four goals for the month. I'm delighted to report that I've finished 2-4/5 of them.

#1   Commission quilt.   Barb N. made the nine-patches from fabric that she and her daughter used for clothing and crafts in the 1990's. She added the green squares long ago.  She asked if I could finish it so she could give it to her daughter.

I added ...

Sew & Tell ~ February 5, 2024 from Melva Loves Scraps

The first page of the 2024 calendar has been turned, the groundhog did not see his shadow and time marches on...  Amy Grant has a song about this topic - Our Time is Now

January, February, March,
The days are marching forward
April, May, June and July
They fly like a hummingbird
August, September, October
The year is almost over
November, December arrive
Another year, come and gone

Time is illusion
Time is a curse
Time is all these things and worse
But our time is now, ohhhhh
Yes, our time is now, ohhhhh
Let us sing before our time runs ...

Weekly update: basting in progress + a terrific book from With Strings Attached

It's been much warmer than normal for early February but kitesurfing?  Brisk northwest winds kept these guys going at Illinois Beach State Park on Sunday afternoon.

 I stayed on the trail.

I auditioned all the vintage Cranston and Wamsutta prints in my stash in hopes of finding a "period" backing for the nine-patch quilt.  Nothing worked to my satisfaction. Though I'd be happy with a half dozen miscellaneous prints on the back I don't think that variety would be appreciated by the friend who commissioned it.  So I bought five yards of a small floral (white on ...

Weekly update: a gift and lots of blocks from With Strings Attached

Late last week Barb-the-quilter called to say that our mutual friend Fran gave her two boxes packed with fabric. Might I be interested?

What do you think I said?

90 yards by weight.  Mostly FQs, many 1990s-era.  (I know because I once had many of them.)    I am going to pass a lot of this along.

I finished all the double four patch blocks and assembled rows.  They're hung in columns because the design wall is wider than it is tall.

I ended up with extra blocks.  I'm already envisioning a low-volume blend of magenta and blue with ...

Sew & Tell ~ January 29, 2024 from Melva Loves Scraps

Well... another week has passed and we are peeking around the corner towards February!  Wow... 10 days of water restrictions or no water are now a thing of the past.

The mountain of laundry is becoming manageable a few loads at a time.  I certainly don't want to contribute to a problem with water over-use should the pumps not be able to keep up. No, no, no... that would be very bad!

You may be wondering, what was your first load of laundry?  It was a load that included two quilts and a few towels.  A quilter has to ...

Sew & Tell ~ January 22, 2024 from Melva Loves Scraps

It's been a week... and what a week it's been!

The record low temperatures over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend shattered record lows of 90 years.  It caused a freeze in a 4-inch water main in the small water system that serves our small neighborhood.  Small as in only 60 or so houses are on this system.  Dave is the president of the board as well as the head maintenance guy for the system.

The "fun" began early Tuesday morning with a text message stating that a residence had no water. Uh-oh... bad news.  As other residents ...

Weekly update: cold weather, a birthday, in the mail almost, WIP + reading from With Strings Attached

It's been cold everywhere in the U.S. this week.  I took a very brief walk from the parking lot to the lakefront to take a few photos.  (I was on my way home from the grocery store and not bundled up (face mask) to walk any farther.)

When the cold settles in I am grateful for central heat and a garage for the car.

I had an ophthamologist appointment on Monday. Hooray! Cataract surgery is scheduled for February.

Stevens turned 84 on Thursday.  He was pleasantly surprised when I told him that my FB post about his birthday ...

A Slow Stitched Sew & Tell from Melva Loves Scraps

It's Sew &Tell time... Welcome!  I had a super productive week with two fabulous finishes that I shared late in the week.  You can read all of the details here.

I am still in a holding pattern for finishing the Denver Nuggets basketball quilt. The backing fabric should be delivered on Tuesday.

After a thorough cleaning of the house and bathrooms, I turned my attention to our Camping Journal quilt. I made a few more park signs and then I created a few kits for the blocks I decided to include to represent each night of our stays.  Below ...

Weekly update: the challenge, a flimsy,. something new + reading from With Strings Attached

I was able to walk in the state park on Thursday, between storms.  Here along the Lake Michigan shoreline we only got 3" of snow , though areas just a few miles west got a lot more. I was among the frozen chosen who made it to church this morning. Today was beautifully sunny but very, very cold with the high of zero.

I'm making good progress on the MQG challenge mini quilt.

Neckties are made on the bias so they have to be stabilized before the fabric can be sewn into anything.  I scrounged what I could from a ...

Sew & Tell Party ~ January 8, 2024 from Melva Loves Scraps

Welcome the weekly party I call Sew & Tell!  Wooo!

I've been busy in my studio.  Let's take a look. Using the few Denver Nuggets pieces I had, and some leftover blocks from a jumbo Irish chain project, I put together the main portion of a top for our Grandson's birthday later this month.

It seems very plain to me.  But I keep saying to myself, "it is for a teenage boy. Boys don't want anything fancy."  Am I right?

Once the top was complete, I decided to place an order for some basketball fabric for the ...

Weekly update: starting with finishes + OMG from With Strings Attached

I was able to go on two good walks this week -- and Stevens came along on one of them.  (I said, "Your Facebook fans want to see your smile!" )   Center right:  a rose hip caught the afternoon sunlight like a little jewel.

We had a little snow on Friday evening which has since melted.  Another storm is coming through midweek.

Our quilt guild meets by Zoom in January and February.  We don't have to worry about storm cancellations and we can schedule speakers who live far away.  What a treat we had this week -- Jenny Doan from Missouri Star ...

2023 in review: a final flimsy before the Annual Reckoning from With Strings Attached

 Happy New Year, dear readers!

I came across a small group of short batik strips, 2-1/2" wide.
Wanda's  latest project provided inspiration.  I made nine-patches, limiting myself to use only the fabric in that group, not cutting any more.  I found a ziploc bag with 2.5" batik squares, just right for the border.   The gold batik background is neutral but not bland.

It's nice to have a flimsy to add to the tally as I present  the Annual Reckoning.

The backstory:  I began tracking fabric in and fabric out in 1998.  "In" means acquired -- purchased or ...

Merry Christmas! From Sew & Tell from Melva Loves Scraps

I stumbled upon a list of Naughty or Nice for Quilters that made me laugh and I just had to share with you.

FYI, I am skipping the Sew & Tell feature, but the party will be open all week.  Maybe you, like me, will be preparing a Year End Review.  I hope you will join the party!  Merry Christmas!
